I stumbled upon this Westall (Clayton) UFO incident while trying to kill my insomnia, by binge watching the Sci-fi channel at 3.00am.
This story is another strange one, with the usual unexplained intrigues and sinister elements. There are links with secret experiments, government cover-ups, nuclear black projects, aviation secrets, and infamous ‘men-in-black’ (or this case blue).
Why don’t we know more about the Westall UFO sighting of 1966? This is the niggling question about one of Australia’s most vivid close encounters. With over two hundred witnesses, quite a few still living, media involvement, government and military involvement, we hear relatively nothing about it. Barely a word in the annuals of Ufology, for years, why?
Roswell eat your heart out!
Wikipedia gives a slightly inaccurate summary of the event: The Westall UFO encounter is an event that occurred on 6 April 1966 in Clayton, Victoria, Australia.
Around 11:00 am, for about 20 minutes, more than 200 students and teachers at two Victorian state schools allegedly witnessed an unexplained flying object which descended into a nearby open wild grass field. The paddock was adjacent to a grove of pine trees in an area known as The Grange (now a nature reserve). According to reports, the object then ascended in a north-westerly direction over the suburb of Clayton South, Victoria, Australia
Below is a ‘must watch’ documentary, in four parts, giving a compelling account of what happened back in 1966. Naturally, answers to the mystery remain elusive.
Interestingly, there are some fascinating synchronistic elements to this. For example, the Australian Synchrotron. It’s is a 3 GeV national synchrotron radiation facility located in the very same place, Clayton, in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, which opened in 2007
Synchrotron nears completion
The Australian Synchrotron is a light source facility (in contrast to a collider), which uses particle accelerators to produce a beam of high energy electrons that are boosted to nearly the speed of light and directed into a storage ring where they circulate for many hours. As the path of these electrons is deflected in the storage ring, by either bending magnets or insertion devices, they emit synchrotron light. The light is channelled to experimental endstations containing specialised equipment, enabling a range of research applications including high resolution imagery that is not possible under normal laboratory conditions. On April 5th 1966…The first Congressional hearing about unidentified flying objects (UFOs) was convened in Washington, before the House Armed Services Committee, chaired by U.S. Representative L. Mendel Rivers of South Carolina. The request for the Congressional investigation had been made by House Republican leader (and future U.S. President) Gerald R. Ford of Michigan.
On April 7th 1966… After an 80-day operation, the United States finally recovered the hydrogen bomb that had been lost off of the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea. After being raised from the sea by a winch, the bomb was loaded onto the rescue ship USS Petrel and shipped back to the United States!
On April 8th 1966… NASA launched its first Orbiting Astronomical Observatory, OAO-1, with detection instruments that would measure stellar ultraviolet radiation without the interference that ground-based telescopes faced on Earth. Unfortunately, the spacecraft's batteries were depleted two days after the launch, after a high-voltage arc when powering up the trackers.
Some people have come up with the usual suspects of weather balloons, and government nuclear secrets, or black projects. It could be, but then again who really knows?
I have written for the culture, entertainment, and travel sectors, both on-line and in the local press.
For over twenty years my day-job consisted of slugging away, making other people rich, in the world's most ruthless, yet strangely boring and inept corporate finance environments. That includes international banking, new-IT, and advertising.
As freelance writer, and critic, in my spare time, I help run a workshop for local writers. I am still writing the on-line movie review blog ‘Celluloid Seduction’, hanging around a lot of the entertainment sites in the process.
After the devastating and unsolved death of my younger brother on 09/09/1994, I now attempt to exorcise feelings of powerlessness, and loss, that plague my psyche, by creating modern literal performance poetry, using traditional rhythmic forms, following in the footsteps of my late grandfather, the Cypriot 'Red Village' poet 'Vasilis'.
I have many interests including the cinema, music, writing of all kinds, political and religious debate, new and weird science and the occult, plus a lot of other things that just don't fit in this box.
This blog is full of memories and opinion and observations. Feel free to quote me, but please respect me enough to credit 'Marie from Cyprus' on anything you repeat.
Thanks for dropping by!
The identities of persons involved have been intentionally kept, but in some paragraphs they are omitted for legal reasons. No offense. If you feel there is an inaccuracy, please contact me and we can discuss what it is that you believe is not true about these accounts. Don't try to sue me, I have no money or assets, the international corp. bankers I use to work for made sure of that!
